Our Academics

Language Arts

At Unity, our Language Arts curriculum is all-encompassing, developing students’ skills in spelling, grammar, analyzing text, speaking with English fluency writing. A variety of texts from informational to fiction are used to provide students with cross-curricular engagement. This engages them in the English language and encourages them to apply their knowledge into all their subject classes at Unity. Students develop their syntax, sentence structure, and grammar through daily lessons that support the overall reading comprehension text for the week.

Each day’s lesson builds on the previous and is aided by accompanying workbooks, allowing students ample practice of the concepts learned in class. Weekly spelling lists develop students’ pronunciation abilities and aid in fluency, support the weekly reading comprehension text. Along with our McGraw-Hill texts on writing development, Unity also utilizes the WriteSource Program. These textbooks help students develop in all areas of writing including grammar, syntax, and writing styles such as expository and descriptive writing.

Language Arts, along with our other subject content supports the Common Core State Standards and other highly recognized agencies.

“The Common Core asks students to read stories and literature, as well as more complex texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas such as science and social studies. Students will be challenged and asked questions that push them to refer back to what they’ve read. This stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that are required for success in college, career, and life.”
Mathematics

Our textbook collection is called McGraw-Hill "My Math". These textbooks integrate conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application. Students are exposed to real-world scenarios that demonstrate the concepts taught. The lessons build on one another compliment different grade levels.

With an emphasis on Common Core National Standards, our math program focuses on developing skills in  problem solving, reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding of topics ranging from arithmetic to geometry, carrying out those procedures efficiently

“McGraw-Hill My Math enables your students to progress toward a higher level of achievement and steadily grow their math confidence.”
Science

Our Science program covers an array of topics in Life Science, Physical Science and Earth Science. Our material follows the Common Core standards for literacy and reading and provides a cross curricular experience. Under this program, students are given opportunities to connect skills learned in Language Arts and Math with their Science curriculum.

We use the “Science: A Closer Look” series from Macmillian/McGraw-Hill. This series builds the curriculum each year, exposing students to the same basic ideas while enhancing their knowledge and level of critical thinking throughout the years. Lessons and chapters within the curriculum begin with Inquiry-based activities and progress through a natural learning cycle in which concepts are explored, content is explained, evaluated, and extended.

Social Studies

Our Social Studies curriculum focuses on American History, geography, critical thinking, and writing. Its content is supported by the National Council for Social Studies standards.

These standards cover skill development in understanding cultural similarities and differences, the role of governments, societies, a linear concept of time, historical events and their significance, as well as relationships between humans, their environment.
